Emergency Plans - Flooding

Multi Agency Flood Plan (PDF)

The Civil Contingencies Act (2004) requires Category 1 Responders to have plans in place to respond to all emergencies. The development of this Multi Agency Flood Plan (MAFP) allows all responding organisations to work together on an agreed, co-ordinated response to flooding.

This plan has been developed by Lancashire Resilience Forum (LRF) Flooding and Severe Weather Sub Group.  It details information regarding triggers for the activation of the plan and the notification arrangements that are in place, along with the multi-agency roles, responsibilities in response to flooding in Lancashire.

Heysham Power Station

Local Authority plans for mitigating the consequences of a nuclear off-site emergency

For information about Heysham Power Station click here.
To ensure that arrangements are in place to deal with the off-site consequences of an incident at the stations, however unlikely, Lancashire County Council produce an off-site emergency plan. This is a requirement under the Radiation (Emergency Preparedness and Public Information) Regulation 2001 – known as REPPIR.

For information about these regulations go to the following link.

The off-site plan is in addition to the company on-site plan and is developed by the County Council working with a number of organisations including Lancaster City Council, emergency services, health organisations and staff from British Energy. The plan is designed to protect the public and environment from any radiation emergency which may have off-site consequences.

All persons and organisations within the Detailed Emergency Planning Zone (DEPZ) around the stations have been issued with information on what to do in the event of an Off-Site Nuclear Emergency. In the event of an Off-Site Nuclear Emergency the public within the DEPZ would be advised to shelter indoors and take potassium iodate tablets.

The tablets act by “topping up” the thyroid gland with stable (non-radioactive) iodine in order to reduce accumulation of radioactive iodine in the thyroid. (in certain circumstances radioactive iodine may be released to the environment during an incident at the site).

Additional stocks of Potassium Iodate tablets are available to be issued following an emergency. These tablets will be issued on the advice of UK Department of Health.

Further information can be obtained from the following site.

A key part of the off-site plan relates to giving information to people who live and work in the immediate vicinity of the site (known as the Detailed Emergency Planning Zone DEPZ – a distance of approximately 1km from the site).  Security protocols mean that a substantial part of the off-site plan cannot be placed in the public domain. However if you require further information please contact:
